Greening the building

Big Ask

Conduct an audit of your church building. The audit in Module 1 of A Rocha's Eco Congregation initiative has some useful questions to help you get started on this.

Install a flexible lighting system so that you do not have to have all the lights on at any one time.

Swap bulbs for ones that are low energy.

Put a 'hippo' or a brick in the toilet cisterns to reduce water usage.

Install sensors in the toilets so that lights are not inadvertently left on.

In the winter, if space allows and your services are held in a hard-to-heat venue, meet in a church hall or the like instead.

Install solar panels on the roof.

Install recycling facilities for consumables used on the premises including paper, glass and tins. If your church is used by the wider community use the booking sheet to outline your environmental commitment and request that groups use the facilities provided.

Where possible, install double glazing for the windows.

Ask for a local contact from the Energy Saving Trust to visit you and give ideas and advice.

Switch your electricity provider to a green one such as Ecotricity or Good Energy.
