Just watched this. It is a difficult situation when people in Africa rely on we Brits wanting to eat food out of season for their livelihood but I still have real concerns about the distance food is travelling and the consumption of declining resources. As much as possible I will still stick with local seasonal food. As much of it as possible grown in my back garden.

I agree. Beans from Kenya may be a relatively short term solution, but with climate change looming it can't be the best thing long-term and people from Kenya would be much better off growing food for their own people. I'm just doing some research at the moment on the food system and it's pretty overwhelming and depressing stuff! I didn't get to see the programme - will try to get it on iPlayer.

Be hopeful people - there is a move of the God's people sweeping the world and seeking to care for the land long-term, farm in sustainable ways, and challenge the dominant structures of 'orthodox' agriculture and 'food production' - here's a good bit from a prophet of the 1970s (Wendell Berry)... "productions tendency is to go 'all out'; it always aims to set a new record. Reproduction is more conservative and more modest; its aim is not to happen once, but to happen again and again and again... At their best, farmers have always had this ancient purpose of reproduction"... and now we are getting it back!
